Three New Sweet Peppers

A pepper for the royalty—‘Baron’ 

Believe it or not, the first day of spring has arrived, so let’s turn our thoughts to shoveling dirt instead of snow, specifically in the vegetable garden. Now, when it comes to vegetables, peppers rank second only to tomatoes so it’s important to offer a diverse selection.

‘Giant Marconi’ at its sweetest

We grow 34 different kinds of peppers, including sweet, savory, and hot varieties to cover a range of culinary bases. This year we have several new selections under each category, so we’ll start with three sweet ones. Each adds a unique mellow flavor and colorful flare to salads, salsas, and sandwiches:

Red ‘Baron’ is sweeter than a typical bell

‘Baron’ is an eye catcher once these smooth bell peppers ripen from green to deep red. Inside, the thick flesh is dark red and crispy, with a taste that’s sweeter than that of a classic bell—a fresh, flavorful addition to a salad.

Big, sweet ‘Giant Marconi’ 

‘Giant Marconi’ is one of the biggest Italian-type sweet peppers. Fruits are long, at around eight inches, and mature from dark green to bright red. Smoky-sweet is how we would describe the taste; if you want them at their sweetest, wait until these peppers are red. Grilling or roasting helps to fully develop the flavor.

‘Golden California Wonder’ is great for stuffing

‘Golden California Wonder’ is a blonde riff on ‘California Wonder’, the standard red bell pepper since the 1920s. Golden yellow fruits mature to rich orange and are thick and hearty inside. They’re sweet and tasty—great for stuffing, or for adding a bright dash of color to salads or salsa.
