MUM & PANSY RECIPES
Two plants that complement each other surprisingly well are mums and pansies. They have a chocolate and peanut butter relationship: each is good on its own, but they are classic when they are combined. Here are some simple but effective samples. Notice (above) how the pansy faces pick up the yellows of the mums; and (below) the pansy eyes pick up the same yellow from the mums.
ORNAMENTAL MUSTARD ‘RED GIANT’
We’ve tinkered with Ornamental Mustards for the past few years, and we’ve found ‘Red Giant’ to be a standout cultivar—especially this year. The plant has a wide and open habit, so it’s exactly what you need if you’re looking for lots of coverage with just a few plants. It grows about 12 to 16 inches high and spreads about 16 to 18 inches wide. ‘Red Giant’ is an edible ornamental, with a flavor described as zesty and full with a good bite. The baby leaves are milder and the older ones are sharp—to tone down the flavor, sauté the leaves in olive oil. Ornamental Mustards are also cold hardy, to the point of being durable. The leaf color gets more intense as the cold sets in, especially after the frost hits it. As long as the plant doesn’t get smothered in snow, it will keep producing leaves until a really, really hard frost strikes. The leaves return with the first warmth of spring, sometime in March.
EARLY ORDER OSTEOS
While you are browsing through the Early Order Catalog, I would like to draw your attention to the Serenity series of Osteospermum, in the 4-1/2 inch pot size (Section C). Notice ‘Pink Magic’ and ‘Peach Magic’; the “magic” in their names refers to the fact that these two African Daisies are color-changers. As each flower opens and ages, its colors change. We’ve grown ‘Peach Magic’ for a couple of years, and the flowers do change colors. This year we’ve added ‘Pink Magic’ to our mix. Osteos are good cool-weather annuals to offer earlier in the season, and they place a low demand on water. Since they tend to sell out early, Osteos are good Early Order crops, especially the unusual varieties.
