Our ornamental cabbages and kales have begun to come into color. Their shades will continue to become more intense as the season cools off, but we have noticed that cabbage and kale sales have taken off early this year. These plants are becoming established pillars of autumn decor, so people are starting to buy them just as the color emerges.

PANSIES IN 6-IN POTS

We’ve been shipping pansies in various sizes for the past week, but our pansies in 6-inch pots are ready now. They pretty much fill the pots, and are less expensive than the 8-inch size. We also offer a broader range of colors and styles in the 6-inch.

Go for a mix if you want a nice colorful bed with no planning whatsoever. Just drop a bunch of these pansies in the ground for an instant fall festival! We pay close attention to the colors we use in our mixes—we chose them carefully. Consider them pre-assembled beauty packages.

DOWNY MILDEW EXPERT

Colleen Warfield from Ball Horticulture is one of our featured speakers at next week’s Field Day event. As you may have heard, Downy Mildew has hit Impatiens crops in 15 states so far, devastating sales in New York, New Jersey and Michigan. It is important that we protect our plants and our market from this disease, and Colleen is one of THE experts on Downy Mildew.

We also have another disease infiltrating the area—Phytophthora, which affects Petunias. Colleen will discuss the warning signs so you can recognize the disease when you spot them. It is a soil-borne pathogen; you will need to watch for it and plan accordingly. Colleen has all the details.
