Pansies are powerful tools we use to paint the early spring landscape. Like a good paint, they are durable in the cold, stand up to harsh weather, keep their color for a long time, and—most importantly—keep costs under control. Pansies are unmatched when it comes to value per square foot—they deliver dense strokes of color at an affordable price and that’s important when there’s a lot of ground to cover. So, what color should you apply? Strong color trends and preferences exist inside the category and we look at them today.

Pansy ‘Delta Premium Pure White’ has a very clear color

White has been experiencing a resurgence in popularity lately so it’s important to note our best selling white Pansies: ‘Delta Premium Pure White’ and ‘Cool Wave White’. We have a strong commitment to growing white material regardless of whether it’s trendy or not, and these two varieties are favorites of ours because of their pure, clean color.

Very few Pansies actually qualify as white in our book. They are classified into other categories the moment they get a tint of color. As a result these plants boost the sales of those other color categories rather than those of white itself. An example of this would be the blue-tinted ‘Cool Wave Frost’.

Even so, there are times when pure white is the color of choice and on those occasions we turn to our two top sellers. Perhaps we need a neutral Pansy to act as a dividing line in the landscape, or to serve as a background for other bright varieties. On the other hand, we could be going for the modern, sophisticated look of a monochromatic display, comprised simply of white Pansies set against an assortment of gray-green foliage. Elegant.

‘Chameleon Sunshine Berry’

Coming to you in living color we have two selections from the new Chameleon series, an industry first for Calibrachoa breeding. As you might imagine from the name, these varieties are unique because their flowers change constantly throughout the season, depending on light levels and day length. At any given moment a bold contrast of colors can be seen on each bloom, with no two exactly alike at once. 

‘Sunshine Berry’ has the strongest contrast of shades with coral, orange, and russet pink forming a compelling pattern on each pretty flower. ‘Cherry Banana’ mixes raspberry, pink, and yellow with brushstrokes of cherry red. These eye-catching multi-color blooms remain in hi-def from June through October.

‘Chameleon Cherry Banana’

Calibrachoa is a favorite for low-maintenance color. We make a point of choosing the more forgiving varieties that are easier for customers to manage once they get them home. Chameleons have a nice, medium compact habit and are known for their durability—they tolerate both heat and fall frost.

‘Cherry Banana’ is available in the 4.5-inch pot. ‘Sunshine Berry’ comes in the 10-inch hanging basket.
