Extra Early! Juncus
Juncus ‘Blue Arrows’ is great in combinations
Long time customers will know that we are fond of Juncus. We use it a lot in our combinations and planters, especially the ones that face a little cold weather. If you are looking for a vertical emphasis that can handle the cold, look to Juncus ‘Blue Arrows’. Although Juncus is a rush, it is surprisingly drought tolerant and it can handle the sometime rough climate that combinations have to go through. It also handles heat, full sun, and shade as well. Basically, it doesn’t complain.
Strong vertical interest
The same traits make Juncus a good choice for landscape beds: evergreen for most of the year, strong vertical interest, handles wet and dry pretty well, stays in its place, no winter maintenance. ‘Blue Arrows’ is a popular variety because of its softly blue-green sheen and stiff bristle look. It grows about three feet high in its mature state, but only about a foot wide. The blades are dense down to the crown, so it doesn’t need plantings to hide knobby knees or twiggy stems.
We are selling Juncus ‘Blue Arrows’ much earlier this year, in a one-gallon nursery pot, as part of our expanded support for cool weather, early spring plantings.
