Coordinating colors is important—notice how the reds and blacks tie together

If you’ve never been to Field Day, ask someone who has and they just might tell you they look at plants a bit differently now. Sure, you read about our beautiful cultivars each week in Field Notes but touring our Display Gardens puts you smack dab in the middle of them and allows you to experience their true height, bushiness, and habit. Observing a plant in its mature state can change your opinion of how you plan to use it.

Remember: here at Diefenbacher we still have plenty of fresh color ready to ship. Unlike many other suppliers, we grow plants specifically for the season as opposed to recycling leftover spring material. Our lush, fresh crops are available now for filling out summer displays—whether you’re just sprucing up or starting from scratch for a special event or new client.

You’ll find a range of color choices in our fresh inventory that are tough enough to stay vibrant through the hot summer here in Cincinnati. Most plants in our summer program are available in the 8-inch pot, as we find that this larger size can take the heat better. We do have some smaller pot sizes, as well as some hanging baskets and a full range of trays.

What do these tenacious UC Horticulture students have in store for us this year?

Once again this year we’ll be walking and talking: touring our educational Display Gardens as I give you the lowdown on what we’re growing and why. There will be plenty of time to answer all your questions, so start jotting them down now as you think of them. Rather than our usual Landscape and Retail sessions we’re moving to simply a morning session and an afternoon session so you can attend the one that is most convenient for you:

MORNING SESSION

• Registration: 9:30AM
• Tour: 10:00AM
• Lunch: 11:30AM

AFTERNOON SESSION

• Registration: 12:30PM
• Lunch: 12:30PM
• Tour: 1:15PM

Each tour takes about an hour to an hour and a half. That leaves a good hour in between for a leisurely lunch, so we can relax a bit and talk even more about plants. Wicked Hickory will be back to tempt us with their hearty barbecue specialties—I think I can already smell that mouth-watering smoky aroma.

There will be a $5 fee to attend Field Day, which includes lunch and our Display Garden Planner for easy note taking. Remember: we walk the gardens come rain or shine so dress comfortably and come prepared for whatever Mother Nature has in store. If you missed this event last year, make plans now to be here on Wednesday, August 23rd for this unique chance to observe our beautiful plants—and Elmer—in action.
