Goji berry—a tasty superfood 

At first glance you might think these are grape tomatoes but they’re actually goji berries—considered by many to be among the healthiest of all super foods. They’ve been touted as curing everything from poor eyesight to cancer, which may or may not be true. We do know that they’re full of vitamins and other nutrients and above all else—they taste good.

Vibrant color for shade

Here’s a glowing New Guinea to brighten up shady spots in the landscape. ‘Infinity® Blushing Lilac’ has iridescent violet-pink blooms that are big and beautiful with blushes of red. These flowers measure up to 3 inches across and are eye-popping against the striking dark burgundy leaves.

Now, the key to success with New Guineas is keeping them well watered. Even so, they are fairly forgiving; if you find that they’ve wilted, water them right away and they should bounce right back. We use them for shade, but they can be grown in hot sun if you’re diligent about watering them. Aside from hydration, they’re pretty low-maintenance.

A continuous display of iridescent blooms

This brilliant variety is great for continuous color in a shady border or large planter. It has a long bloom time and was bred to be vigorous, with blooms covering the dramatic foliage from spring to frost.

Hard at work preparing for our favorite day

Mark your calendar: Field Day 2017 will take place on Wednesday, August 23rd. We’ll be following the same format as last year: I’ll be leading the charge through our beautiful and informative display gardens. Start jotting down some questions now—the back and forth about the plants is what I look forward to the most. 

Lunch comes in a close second. Hunger pangs usually start to set in about midday so we’re bringing back our favorite local food truck—Wicked Hickory—for a mouth-watering barbecue lunch. As a matter of fact, some of the best plant discussions have happened while we kicked back and shared a meal.
