New Combos for Spring

We’ve added four new combinations to our lineup for spring, full of fresh flowering plants and accents in complementary shades. That tedious task of mixing and matching has already been done—just place these beautiful arrangements where you need a splash of vibrant color and move on to the next project. 

‘Millionaire’

Shiny, dark purple eggplant is eye-catching in the summer vegetable garden, with large, oblong fruits hanging like raindrops from its stately branches. For grilling, stuffing, and homemade Italian dishes it remains a customer favorite year after year. In addition to the classic variety we have a couple of interesting new hybrids this season.

‘Millionaire’ is a popular Japanese type, with smooth, slender fruits that measure about 2 inches across and 8–10 inches long. With tender deep purple skin and nearly seedless flesh, it makes a delicious addition to stir-fries and other healthy recipes. Plants produce fruits early and often, thriving in hot weather with full sun. 

‘Satin Moon’

‘Satin Moon’ bears glossy purple-black fruits that are oval and slightly fluted, growing about 6–8 inches long. They’re mild and tasty, with firm flesh that lends itself to thick, meaty slices, which hold together nicely on the grill and make a substantial base for mouthwatering eggplant Parmesan. Full, bushy plants can reach up to 28 inches high and wide.

Classic eggplant comes in the 1801 flat; ‘Millionaire’ and ‘Satin Moon’ are available in the 1202 flat size.

Beautiful bloom of Lantana ‘Lucky Red’

Bright red-to-orange flowers contrast with tidy dark green foliage on this tough-as nails lantana. It adds a cheerful, bright pop of color while standing up to heat, humidity, and drought—a great addition to the design toolbox. ‘Lucky Red’ stays upright and mounded, and extends the season of color all through our hot Cincinnati summer.

We trialed this plant in a couple of our display beds last year, combining it with rose and red strawflowers in one and with ‘Dracula’s Blood’ cock’s comb and yellow French marigolds in the other. It brightened up the darker shades in both beds, so keep it in mind when you need an orange-red to balance a red-red in an arrangement.

‘Lucky Red’ grows 12–16 inches tall with a spread of 12–14 inches. It’s a good choice for small space gardens as well as containers, and it’s pollinator-friendly.
