Zinnia ‘Pop Art Golden and Red’

A unique bicolor zinnia

We have eye-catching plants on the brain after last week’s Cartwheel gerbera, so this week we’d like to introduce you to a unique bicolor zinnia for spring: ‘Pop Art Golden and Red’. Each golden, dahlia-type flower is flecked with vivid red, Jackson Pollack-style—a work of art unto itself. 

‘White Stream™’—hundreds of fragrant white flowers

From the Stream™ series by Danziger We have a new lobularia with fragrant pure white flowers. Hundreds of blooms put the scent of spring in the air as they cover a spreading mound of foliage.

In a bit of a twist, this series has been bred to be heat-tolerant. It’s actually noted for surviving the heat of a Texas summer—quite an achievement, since up until now alyssum has been traditionally a cool-season plant. ‘White Stream™’ is a horse of a different color—it’s the most heat-tolerant of the Stream™ series and does not tolerate freezing temperatures at all.

A controlled, cascading nature

With a controlled, cascading nature this variety looks dramatic spilling out of containers and baskets. It also makes a lovely accent in large combination planters and patio pots. Since ‘White Stream™ reaches only around 4–8 inches tall it’s useful as a groundcover in the landscape as well.

We grow this selection in the 4.5-inch pot.

A darker, more red version of ‘Redhead’

‘Ruby Slipper’ is a new coleus we’ve added for 2017. It's a more intense version of ‘Redhead’, in a deeper, darker shade of red. This variety keeps its compact form and branches more freely than other red coleus selections, so you’ll find that the plants are nice and full.

We like to use this eye-catching red as a stunning background in landscape designs; plants reach 14–24 inches tall and perform well in sun or shade. From spring to the first hard frost, ‘Ruby Slipper’ provides a vivid display of color. As the temps get cooler it takes on subtle variations of that original glowing red.

For a striking combination planter use this red coleus as the centerpiece, then fill in with ‘Wave® Blue’ petunias. ‘Ruby Slipper’ also works as a dramatic accent on a porch or patio—or along a yellow brick road.
