Bat Face Cuphea

An uncanny resemblance…

Purple and red bicolors are striking in the first place but take a look at these unique flowers—do they remind you of anything? For me, the bat resemblance is uncanny. A colony of these little faces staring out of a planter is sure to elicit a lot of second glances.

‘Dreamy Moonlight’

We have two stunning dahlia selections from the new Dreamy series, with dramatic dark bronze foliage and bright, warm semi-double flowers. Notice the bold contrast—it makes for some striking planters and landscape beds. These plants bloom nonstop from April until frost, and we like the medium size—it’s easy to work with, which is always a plus.

Dreamy dahlia varieties are robust plants that tolerate a range of weather conditions, from hot summer days to windy, rainy blustery ones. They love the sun best, but they thrive in partial shade as well; just remember to water them.

As members of our Zoo’s Best Pollinators program, Dreamy dahlias attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, providing shelter and nectar for these important members of our ecosystem. A portion of the purchase price of plants in the Pollinators line will be donated to the Cincinnati Zoo to further their community and botanical programs.

‘Dreamy Inspire’

We have two selections from the Dreamy series: ‘Inspire’ has soft salmon pink flowers with deep red eyes and hints of yellow; ‘Moonlight’ has blooms of pure sulphur yellow.

Striking foliage of ‘Alabama Sunset’

‘Alabama Sunset’ is one coleus that gets a lot of positive feedback, mainly because of the foliage color. It’s easy to see why—this contrast of dusty red and lime green is striking to say the least. Planted en masse across the landscape it truly gives the impression of a panoramic sunset that can be enjoyed at any time of day.

This coleus grows beautifully—by the end of summer expect to see a nice large shrub with a neat, tidy appearance, whether it’s been tended to or not. ‘Alabama Sunset’ fills large planters quickly too, plus as part of our sun coleus line it performs well in sun or shade and can handle the heat and humidity. For such a beautiful plant it’s decidedly unfussy. 

We like to mix ‘Alabama Sunset’ with other chartreuse foliage, like  ‘Wasabi’ or ‘Electric Lime’ coleus, and some ‘Lemon’ licorice vine as a spiller. It also combines easily with many of our other multi-colored coleus selections.
