Quality Pointers for Poinsettias

From a grower’s point of view, the poinsettia crop is a demanding one to grow well—it’s a true test of our professional skills. The timing is especially important: light exposure, feeding, watering, heat—the crop is just a massive bunch of inescapable iPhone alarms firing off all the time. If we’re off on our timing a number of things can go wrong: the plant stunts, it doesn’t color up quite right, or it looks a little scrawny. Mastering that challenge—successfully growing a poinsettia crop well and shipping a quality plant that is tough to nail down—is the satisfaction we get as growers. This year we nailed it—let me show you what I mean.

For a truly unique spin on Christmas décor we recommend our distinctive Hearthside combo planter. The Hearthside has become a tradition here over the years—it’s a Diefenbacher exclusive. Each one is a unique design, full of personality—just like the designers themselves.

If you’re new to the Hearthside combo, it comes in a 24-inch rectangular planter—long and thin. We set several of our vibrant poinsettias down the center, then get creative with  assorted foliage plants in complementary shades of silver and green. We even get a little avant-garde and spray juncus grass silver for vertical interest.

Remember that in addition to our lush poinsettias we have a collection of fragrant holiday greens, freshly cut from local firs in Central Ohio. These offer one slight advantage over poinsettias—they can be used outdoors during this cold season:

Evergreen Wreaths—Handmade in Ohio, our wreaths measure 24–28 inches; a nice, full mix of aromatic greens comes trimmed with seasonal embellishments

Roping—Thick, lush white pine roping is tightly bound and comes in 25-foot lengths

Arrangements—Medium (16 inches tall x 14 inches wide) and large (36 inches tall x 24 inches wide) sizes are available; all branches are newly cut at the time each arrangement is made

For quick splashes of color or large-scale design projects it’s hard to go wrong with traditional greenery—the scent alone steals the show. All of our material is very fresh so your holiday displays will look prime for Christmas and last straight on into the New Year.
