Mum Combos for Halloween

With Halloween decorations already entering the stores, be sure to pick up some October-themed mum combos in planters and hanging baskets. We have some festive mixes in colors that have been put together with Halloween in mind, for some lighthearted charm that contrasts nicely with traditional dark and spooky décor elements. Early Halloween displays tend to center around warm harvest colors because the weather is still nice, and these combos make cheery autumn accents to instantly brighten a porch, patio, or deck. 

Pansy ‘Matrix^® Yellow’

If you’re looking for a carpet of color in the fall landscape that you can see from a distance, go with pansies or violas. Pansies have larger flowers but violas fill in fast for nice even color throughout a garden bed. Both perform strongly right into winter and then come back the following spring.

Pansies and violas traditionally follow mums as staples of autumn color and overlap with them for a while. Choose complementary shades, such as ‘Matrix^® Yellow’ pansies to plant around the base of yellow mums. Contrasting varieties work nicely also, such as ‘Sorbet XP Purple’ violas alongside orange mums. If you’re short on time or just prefer to make life easy, pair Matrix^® Clear Mix pansies with practically any autumn mum selection.

Pansy ‘Matrix^® Purple’

Ornamental kale ‘Nagoya Red’

Now’s the time to pick up some ‘Nagoya Red’: it has plenty of cold tolerance for the crisp autumn nights to come and the color is just getting started. These plants last a long time—we’ve seen them in beds and planters around town in November and even December, still as red and showy as ever.

Ornamental kale is great for adding texture to a design—we like the ruffled leaves on this variety. It’s great in a winter combo or in a planter on its own; we also use it to create geometric patterns with ‘Nagoya White’ or ‘Songbird White’.
