Three New Ornamental Vegetables

First: Cabbage ‘January King’ is a French vegetable and an American Ornamental

We’ve brought three varieties up from the showy vegetable garden into our Ornamentals line and first we have a French Cabbage. Like most edible Cabbages—and unlike the Ornamentals—‘January King’ forms a head rather than a loose rosette. Notice its signature look: swirling violet color in the outer leaves wrapping around the head. Right off the bat we knew this was an eye-catcher so we included it in this year’s production. A touch of Savoy-style blistering gives the Cabbage a beautiful ruffled appearance.

‘Colossus Red Blotch’ has one of the largest Pansy flower heads we sell

To infuse the fall landscape with vibrant red, we recommend ‘Colossus Red Blotch’ Pansy. It has a big, bold crimson face with a dramatic deep dark blotch for contrast. This is color that gets noticed.

Colossus is a great landscape Pansy. Huge 4-inch blooms—and more blooms per plant—lead to seamless color coverage. Plus the wide faces tilt forward and upward allowing more of the flower to cover the greenery underneath. It’s all about the color.

Our Late Summer/Early Fall Garden begins with Peppers and Coleus

One of our Display Gardens over by the barn is planted up with material you can use in the late summer and early fall. Showcasing more than one season is important when selling fresh color to your customers. These photos were taken the day we put the garden in so the plants are just getting started.
