Geraniums: Three Interesting Varieties

FN 1.4 GER Sofie Cascade 0005
Long trailing stems

With lots of flowers and long trailing stems, ivy geraniums remain popular for baskets and containers of all kinds. Despite their trailing nature they have a lovely well-rounded shape that makes for an elegant presentation—we use them in window boxes, hanging baskets, and standing planters.

Heat lover ‘Blizzard Blue’

Newer breeding methods have resulted in plants with much better heat tolerance than older varieties—an important quality for Cincinnati landscapes—so we get a constant show of color right up until the end of the season. A bit of shade is still recommended, though, considering how high the mercury rises around here at the height of summer.

Here are three distinctive geraniums from our collection for 2017:

FN 1.5 GER Sofie Cascade 0004
‘Sofie Cascade’

‘Sofie Cascade’ is a traditional European ivy. Clusters of soft, salmon-pink flowers look striking against waxy, deep green foliage. This lightly scented geranium is a vigorous grower.

‘Blizzard Blue’

‘Blizzard Blue’ is very blue for an ivy, though it’s not a true blue, per se. Blooms are actually light violet-lavender with red-violet veins. Blizzard is among the most heat-tolerant ivy series on the market.

’Tango Rose Mega Splash’

‘Tango Rose Mega Splash’ is a unique, eye-catching zonal geranium with splashes of deep magenta on pink-lavender petals. A tidy, upright mounding habit makes this plant versatile for use in the border, as a focal point, or in mass plantings—as well as in window boxes, baskets, and containers.

All of these pretty geranium selections are available in the 10-inch hanging basket. We have many other ivy and zonal-type geraniums in our collection, including cultivars from the Calliope, Caliente, Contessa, and Temprano series.
