Over the years we’ve gotten accustomed to seeing Impatiens walleriana in window boxes and borders—it’s a landscape standard for lightening shade areas. Often the bright flower colors are used to create bold patterns and eye-catching stripes in the border. Now, flashy has its place, but some situations call for a more understated approach.

‘Fiesta Salsa’—the look of a rose in shade

If you need an upscale, elegant shade selection we recommend the Fiesta series of double impatiens in the 10-inch hanging basket. As opposed to the typical impatiens flower that has a somewhat flattened appearance, these very large, fully double blooms look like roses—so we get the look of a rose in shade, with a lot less fuss. 

Flowers cover these mounded plants from spring through summer with no deadheading required. Simply hang them around a shady porch or entryway for quick hits of vibrant color—and remember to water regularly.

Fiesta doubles are notably uniform in habit so they combine easily with each other and with other shade-tolerant varieties. We use them in mixed containers and in the shade or part shade border, where they bump up the texture with their ruffled rose-like blooms. Still, we have to say we’re partial to the way they fill out and overflow a hanging basket.  

Butterflies and hummingbirds visit these beautiful plants frequently, adding a bit of motion to all the flower power.
